EVENT DESCRIPTION
The fourth annual Royal Drakensberg MTB Challenge will take place on 2 & 3 June 2012 on the dramatic All Out Adventures MTB Trail System. Situated in the beautiful KwaZulu Natal Northern Drakensberg, home of the magnificent Amphitheatre, All Out Adventures is midway between Johannesburg and Durban, making it an awesome and accessible venue for a large number of riders.
The varied topography of the area makes it a mountain biker’s paradise, with challenging steep climbs and flowing banked downhill’s for more experienced riders, and lovely level meanders for those just starting out. Trails are mainly single track or disused 4x4 tracks that access the area’s most spectacular spots. All trails were designed and built by local MTB enthusiast and All Out Adventures director, Chris Mecklenborg, and promise to satisfy all who come to ride. No less than 20 bridges keep the fun flowing on the best trails in the Berg.
The weekend promises fun for the whole family, with a Family Day on Saturday 2nd, and the main race day on Sunday 3rd. Saturday’s Family Day will feature a MTB Gymkhana and Skills Challenge in the morning, followed by a Fun Ride / Walk to the river for afternoon tea. Saturday night is the hair raising night ride followed by Potjie Dinner at All Out Adventures.
Sunday’s races include the 45km Classic, a 19km Intermediate and the 10km Beginner trail. Both the 20 and 45km races will be passing through the Montusi Gorge and climb the cascades on Waterfall Challenge. The 45km race boasts an elevation gain of more than 1000 meters, making it a real MOUNTAIN bike experience! The 10km route follows a more gentle meander along the river and is great for kids and beginner adults.
The awesome spectator entertainment at the Adventure Centre, the legendary Kids Zone and great food & coffee will be on offer again, making this a great event for riders and spectators.
