Drakensberg self-catering, bed and breakfast, or dinner as well. You choose when you book, and the kitchen in your cottage matters more than you would think.
Three ways to eat
Rates are charged per person per night on one of three bases: self-catering, bed and breakfast, or dinner, bed and breakfast. You choose yours when you book.
Self-catering is the least expensive and the most work. You bring your food and you cook it. Bed and breakfast adds the morning meal, and the third option adds dinner as well.
What each one costs changes from year to year, so take the figures off the rates pages rather than from a post like this one.
What arrives at the door
There is no restaurant here. Meals are cooked in our kitchen and brought to your door when ready, so you eat at your own table, on your own patio, in your own time.
Breakfast comes between 8:00 and 8:30 in the morning. Dinner comes between 6:30 and 7:00 in the evening, and if you are still walking back down the hill it will be kept warm for you.
Dinner is a set menu that changes daily. You are not ordering off a list, you are eating what the kitchen cooked that day. We have an organic garden on site, and its vegetables, herbs and fruit in season are at our cooks' disposal, for an organic gastronomic experience. Vegetarian is no trouble. We cannot do vegan, halal, kosher or allergy-specific cooking, and that is better known before you book than after.
Breakfast, cooked in our kitchen and brought to your door.Drakensberg self-catering is not the same in every cottage
This is the part people get caught by. A kitchenette and a kitchen are both somewhere to make coffee, but only one of them will roast a leg of lamb. Before you plan a week of cooking, check what is in the unit you booked.
- Stove and oven: cottages 1 and 3, plus 8 and 10. Suite 6 is listed as a kitchenette but has a gas stove and oven as well.
- Full kitchen but no oven: cottage 11.
- Two-plate gas stove top and an air fryer, but no oven: cottages 4 and 9.
- No stove or oven listed, just a microwave, air fryer and coffee machine: cottages 2 and 5, and suite 7.
Nine of the eleven units have a braai of their own, under cover or in a lapa. Cottages 4 and 9 share a braai on wheels for now.
Guided hikes are arranged before arrival too, so book those when you book your meals.
The rest of the menu
Alongside breakfast and dinner there is a picnic package, a larger picnic lunch, a cheese platter, and a DIY braai pack with a choice of beef or chicken. Each is priced per person on the dining page.
If you are on Drakensberg self-catering and cannot face another supermarket en route to the Berghouse and Cottages, you have those four options to choose from. This is the easiest way to arrive with no groceries in the car and still eat well.
