Royal Natal National Park – Drakensberg Hiking, Tugela Falls & Amphitheatre Guide
Discover the breathtaking beauty of Royal Natal National Park, one of South Africa’s most iconic mountain destinations and part of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed uKhahlamba-Drakensberg Park. Famous for its dramatic mountain scenery, world-class hiking trails, and the spectacular Drakensberg Amphitheatre, this natural wonder attracts hikers, birdwatchers, photographers, and nature lovers from around the world.
Located in the Northern Drakensberg of KwaZulu-Natal, Royal Natal National Park earned its royal title after a visit by the British Royal Family in 1947. During the state visit, Princess Elizabeth celebrated her 21st birthday in the area, and the historic Queen’s Causeway bridge was specially built in her honour. Visitors can still see this bridge today while hiking to the beautiful Cascades trail.
The Famous Drakensberg Amphitheatre
The highlight of Royal Natal National Park is the world-renowned Drakensberg Amphitheatre, a magnificent rock wall stretching approximately 5 kilometres in length. This towering cliff face is regarded as one of the most impressive natural formations in the world.
The Amphitheatre is home to the spectacular Tugela Falls, recognised as one of the highest waterfalls on Earth and the highest waterfall in Africa. During summer, especially after rainfall on the escarpment, Tugela Falls can often be seen cascading down the cliffs directly from the windows of Berghouse and Cottages.
The Continental Divide of South Africa
This region of the Drakensberg is often referred to as South Africa’s “Continental Divide” because it is the source of two of Southern Africa’s most important rivers:
- The Tugela River, which flows eastward into the Indian Ocean
- The Orange River, which travels approximately 2,000 kilometres westward to the Atlantic Ocean
The combination of towering mountains, river systems, waterfalls, and panoramic landscapes makes this area one of the most scenic destinations in South Africa.
Hiking Trails in Royal Natal National Park
Hiking in Royal Natal National Park is extremely popular, offering unforgettable mountain adventures for both casual walkers and experienced hikers. Two of the most famous hikes are the Gorge Trail and the Sentinel Peak & Tugela Falls hike.
The Gorge Trail
The Tugela Gorge trail is approximately 7.5 kilometres one way and is considered one of the most beautiful hikes in the Drakensberg Mountains.
The trail follows the Tugela River through a spectacular gorge carved over thousands of years by flowing water. Towering cliffs rise on both sides of the river, creating breathtaking scenery throughout the hike.
Along the route, hikers can enjoy:
- Crystal-clear rock pools ideal for swimming
- Picnic spots beside the river
- Incredible mountain views
- Birdwatching opportunities
- Wildlife sightings including baboons and antelope
Bird enthusiasts should keep an eye out for the rare Bearded Vulture, also known as the Lammergeier, as well as the majestic Black Eagle.
Before starting your hike, be sure to sign the mountain register at the visitor centre and sign out again upon your return for safety purposes.

Tugela Falls & Sentinel Peak Hike
The trail begins at the Sentinel Car Park, approximately 1.5 hours’ drive from Berghouse and Cottages. Hikers ascend to the top of the Amphitheatre using the famous chain ladders, eventually reaching the summit plateau near the border of Lesotho.
At over 3,000 metres above sea level, the views are truly spectacular and often described as standing on the “Roof of Africa”.
Important Hiking Tips
- The hike is considered moderate to difficult
- Carry warm clothing, food, and sufficient water
- Weather conditions can change rapidly
- You may experience “four seasons in one day”
- Always sign the mountain register before and after your hike
From the chain ladders, continue along the river path for approximately 2.5 kilometres to reach the top of Tugela Falls. Adventurous hikers can enjoy a refreshing swim in the famous natural “jacuzzi” pool located near the edge of the falls, weather permitting.
For the best photographs of the waterfall, walk approximately 250 metres away from the edge to capture the full beauty of the falls and surrounding escarpment.
