Gorge Hiking Trail – Royal Natal National Park (15km’s)
Royal Natal National Park’s most popular hiking trail.
The longest hike in the park and it is also considered South Africas best one-day hike.
The sheer magnitude of these mountain pillars, rock faces, and cliffs will remain etched in your memory forever.
The park is situated 16 km’s from the Berghouse and Cottages
Pay an entrance fee(R45 each) in cash at the Royal Natal Park gate, continue into the park keeping left along the drive until you reach the Gorge Car Park.
The Gorge trail winds its way up the most picturesque landscape adjacent to the Mighty Tugela river and at the base of the Highest waterfall in the World, called the Tugela falls. The waterfall can be seen from a distance in the summertime due to summer rainfall.
Spectacular views of the sheer cliff face of the gnarly Amphitheater mountain forms the backdrop to this awesome and popular hike in the Drakensberg mountains. Look out for the Policemans Helmet along the way.
Just 200m from the Gorge and Tunnel one can find an awesome rock pool to swim in. Enjoy some well deserved treats from your picnic hamper.
This is a self-guided hike, no need for a guide as there is only one path in and out from the Gorge with clear signage along the way.
Look out for the most beautiful flaura and fauna along the way.
A tip for the trip, make sure you set out early in the day to avoid summer storms.
